Making a start on the office
Not a lot to talk about really, just your standard get rid of the wallpaper and repaint job. Here is a shot of the bedroom as we bought it ...
Nothing really wrong with it but we're keen to make the place our own. The blue woodwork was a bit of negative for us and the wallpaper looked a bit worn.
Making a start may be a bit of an understatement. While I was in Rio, Louise and mother Ruth made a start taking wallpaper off the walls.
That was 2 and a half months ago. Last week end we continued. It took about a day to get the rest of the wall paper off. Sanded the walls down to remove the thin layer of wallpaper paste that the scrappers didn't get and then cleaned the walls down.
We painted the woodwork white. Took two coats to cover the dark blue that is underneath. It needs a third coat but we're leaving that until after we've finished the walls.
So the biggest challenge we thought we would face during the office decorating is that it has previously been extended. Therefor we have a section of wall that has a different texture on both sides of the room. We opted to give the room a thorough base coat of white. The base coat actually turned into two base coats and a third over the parts we thought needed it.
We had some leftover white bathroom paint from our last house. As we are keeping the ceiling white in this room, instead of using the cheap emulsion we used as a base coats on the walls, we used the bathroom paint on the ceiling.
And then for the colour coats. We went for Dulux's "Crushed Aloe" as a colour for the whole room. I am reliably informed that this is a nice shade of green..
The darker colour on the walls is where we applied a second coat over the parts of the wall that have a different texture to the other walls. The paint didn't grip to some parts of the wall, the base coat paint was so cheap and rubbish, it was difficult to tell before the colour coats. Luckily a second coat over the weird bits of wall seems to have done the trick.
Neither of the above pictures gives a true representation of the colour. In reality, its somewhere between the two. I think. Probably not. Ask Louise.
We're going to do a final light coat around the room, to use the paint up more than anything. We're going to replace the carpet but that will wait until we have decorated the second bedroom. It's a slightly smaller room so shouldn't take too long. Especially as all of the above has only taken us 7 days 5 of which we were both at work for!
